Hi there. First of many posts.
We've just started renovating our house and one of the first orders of business was to open up the old chimney ready for a range cooker. We used acrows to support the brickwork and opened up the space. We installed one concrete lintel across the space.
All well and good, but it is a double layer of bricks and the second layer is still being supported by the original arch (which you can't actually properly see because the first layer is in the way). Because of the angles involved, coming down on each side, I think this will cause problems when it comes to installing an extractor fan. It will also look daft and make the fan too low to meet specs of cooker. I'm guessing the correct thing to would be to fit two lintels from the front at the same time?
So my question is, is there any way of retroactively securing the second course of brickwork so I can remove the side bricks and secure the throat, without undoing all of the work already done? I don't fancy trying to put acrows up inside the chimney and standing in it while I try to fit a concrete lintel!
Could I perhaps drive something through the first course to support the second course?
Hope this makes sense?
