Are there delays in issuing an amended V5C?

I recently bought a Nissan Micra. The car was originally tax-exempt (Motability) but I don't qualify for that so the dealer paid the tax and added it to my invoice. He left the V5C at the Post Office and I have the receipt for the transaction. The car is showing as taxed on the gov website, so I'm not too worried, but it's been a month and I haven't received my new shiny V5C. Are there delays with these, as with other stuff from the DVLA? (Apparently this particular action can't be done online and has to be done at a Post Office).

There’s delays with everything these days - Covid seems to be the excuse of the moment. Easy to give the DVLA a call to check the situation. If they say it’s been sent but hasn’t arrived, ask for another.

I applied to renew my driving licence about a week ago, the new one arrived about 4 days latter. Thinner than the old one naturally.

Yes, I work with DVLA a lot in my day job. They have about 800,000 unopened items of post at the minute! They are really struggling for some things. Online transactions are going OK (and your dealer COULD have just done it all online), but anything that involves opening an envelope is subject to quite big delays (Put it this way, I had a grumpy copper on to me about car that we had sold in APRIL that he's stopped because it wasn't showing on the DVLA database as being registered in AUGUST)!

It's Covid. They're working at much-reduced staff rates and their unions are arsey because they don't think the Covid measures are sufficient, so they go on strike from time to time as well. Working from home for anything that involves personal data (which is practically everything DVLA does) or handling money (which is quite a lot of what DVLA does), is a bit of a nightmare for them too. I'd give it at least 8 weeks. If it's showing up on the gov.uk website though. You're legally fine. The database has been updated, it's just the paper that needs printing and posting.

Thanks Avocet. The dealer did say that because there was a change from motability to normal he couldn't do it online. Would communications from a main post office be in that pile of unopened mail or is there a different system? The dealer taxed it on the morning I collected it and it was showing as taxed on the gov website the next day.

Yes, amazingly, ALL the DVLA's post (regardless of where it came from) goes to the same depot. 10 years ago, they had a network of "Local Offices" around the country and they could have processed them there, but they closed them all and centralised everything to Swansea.

I won't hold my breath waiting for my driving licence renewal to arrive then, but at least they say you can carry on driving with the old one.

Well, I bought my car in mid-September. The dealer left the old V5C at the Post Office with my details. He taxed it for a year and the next day it was showing as taxed on the gov website. But the vehicle details show the last V5C as issued in 2020. So do I assume that the taxation is computerised and the log book snail mail?

yes

I hear there is a huge pile of unopened mail at DVLC

something to do with poor infection control during the pandemic, horrible working conditions, people don't want to work there.

i am waiting for a corrected tax refund for a car I sold last year.

changed car last weekend. posted change of ownershp on monday, had new log bok back today saturday. all good.
That's the bit I can't understand. Online transactions are going reasonably well, but if you post something, why doesn't it just go to the back of the queue? I think they must have just "quarantined" the huge backlog and are working on newer stuff coming in, perhaps? Mrs. Avocet wrote to them in June about her licence. Still hasn't heard back....

To be fair, their infection control measures were better than the government guidelines demanded. It was the unions who weren't satisfied with them.

is this the government that won't wear facemasks?

And claims they aren't needed because they're all buddies?

I must get my Ferry Rental contract renewed.
