Me too but what's the point of quoting Boris's mantra - well educated work force etc. The fact is India has decent universities. It also has a massive population and an emerging economy and a wide spread of living standards = a wide spread in labour rates as well. Clothes may be made there also even in places like Bangladesh.

The missing part for the UK is Boris's £billions pouring in. I asked myself to do what? A couple of others can be added. For who and why? Who being who will benefit. What sector of the population? 100 energy licences will bring some in if they are taken up. The gov wont be providing the money.

I would like to see a professional qualification for builders...

...If they started out with proper professional qualifications, on how to run a professional business, with really good project management skills, far More would succeed instead of going bust, or letting clients down through poor management.

There are already academic professional qualifications - e.g. "Building Engineer" and "Project Manager" (plus others). Surely what is needed is something like the General Contractor's certificate many states in the USA insist on builders having. To achieve GC status generally requires qualification in a specific trade, plus an additional course where construction management, "code" (building regs), health safety and environment and a host of other subjects are taught - and where a high pass mark is required to obtain your GC ticket. No GC ticket - no permission to run a build, which tends to reduce the "cowboy builder" phenomenon

Similarly in some EU countries there are legal competency minima for many trades - for example. in the Netherlands if you want to run a business as a painter and decorator you actually have to hold their equivalent of our City & Guilds qualification.

It usually makes me smile whenever i see someone use Plato's 'Utopia' in reference to a "dream of the future". They really should read it; it would revise their opinion about basing a modern society on Spartan morals and Communist economics.
