same direction of travel?

Come on andy, think it through a bit further

If we had a truly conservative government at this moment in time it would put the country on an emergency footing and do the following; first freeze all spending and investigate what's happening to all the money; secondly kick out and repel, as forcefully as necessary, all the economic migrants and thirdly to round up and lock up all the country's criminals. But the current "conservatives" are doing the exact opposite on all three counts. They are liberals in all respects.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, Notch, but your post has contradictions:

This has always been the case. Contradicted by

Labour CAN do it - sometimes - regardless of the lack of FPTP.

But regardless, the decades-weary "trope" remains.
Surely any party worth its salt and with real designs on taking up government would have lanced it long ago?

I disagree, it isn’t contradictory.

The power of the unions was broken back in the early 80s and we’ve had a constant shift towards the right ever since.

The fact is Conservatives will always hold the balance of power. The reason is because the wealthy will always fund the party that helps them maintain their wealth, that includes the billionaire media tycoons.

Have a look at the media which has the biggest funding, the biggest readership, it is:

The Telegraph
The Daily Mail
The Express
The Sun
The Times

all owned by billionaires and Conservative donors.

add on all the right wing lobby groups, the Tufton street cabal pushing out non stop libertarian propaganda, whose spokespeople get booked as “experts” all the time, it’s no surprise the right get to win the propaganda wars.

the only left wing media really is Mirror and Guardian.

None of which would be worth a tinker's cuss, unless the electorate were fundamentally right-leaning in the first place?

That maybe the case but if they think the Tories are going to do it for them then they're going to be sadly disappointed.
They've taxed people up to the hilt, locked everyone up ruining thousands of small businesses. A criminal justice system that's not fit for purpose, a multi cultural society with unfettered immigration being the back drop. An overseeing of laws giving the rights of minorities (trans) over the majority. A dash for nett zero incorporating taxing people off the road with small businesses hit with congestion charging.
Yeah very conservative.

I'll be voting Labour next time for one simple reason. IMO the Tory party are such a bunch of ****z, that much of the anti Tory drivel posted on here, is now actually true. The nastier aspects of their policies have magnified a gazillion times over the last few years. Constant moaning on the internet doesn't really achieve much. Good fun for some I guess. Bringing change is difficult but voting with your feet, wallet or ballot paper might make a difference.
The problem I see is that the divide between rich and poor is genuinely increasing. At a fair rate too. When you get to the point that the tide of poverty is up round the necks of professional workers things have clearly gone too far.
Trouble is, will any party be able to really make change? Will the ruling classes allow it? Not until it affects them I guess.
Bring out the guillotines.......lol

You mean in the sense that people who live in Russia would be fundamentally in favour of invading Ukraine even if Putin did not control public discourse, mass media, political voices, national history, and internet access?

The highlighted part is the exact point.

Too many people, especially in here just don't understand the volume of people working hard but struggling.

And then complain about benefits.

You are missing the point.

They are constantly being pushed to the right, or away from the left.

No, you're missing the point.

I asked why Labour has allowed the decades-old trope - that Labour can't manage the economy - to persist for so long.
When I got the answer that "It's the right wing MSN", I asked why there isn't a left-wing MSN.

You mean in the sense that people who live in Russia would be fundamentally in favour of invading Ukraine even if Putin did not control public discourse, mass media, political voices, national history, and internet access?

No; I questioning the rationale behind Labour not lancing the "You can't manage the economy!" line, which has been around since before my time.

Yeah thats an interesting point.

was it the messaging that moved the overton window to the right or was it the electorate moved the overton window to the right?

Weve certainly seen a societal shift: we no longer have workers going into huge factories in the industrial regions, paying their union dues every week.

nowadays far more people are self employed, maybe as contractors to big firms, maybe in the gig economy.

the working class are now more likely to be Conservative voters, whilst the middle class metropolitan elite are more likely to be socialist Corbyn fans

How would they convince people like Gant, Gone, or the editor of the Daily Wail?

If you are in your 50s then the whole of the period since 1979 has been a period of Conservative govt with only one stint being Labour which ended with GFC.

that whole period has been one where the power has been with the wealthy right, especially in the media -Blair might have been Labour but he was supported by Murdoch

Im not sure where you see how Labour have any opportunity to lance a boil perpetuated by the Tory supporting billionaires that have controlled the media for many decades
