Just been called up for jury service. I have to ask myself what is the sense in calling me up as an ex-copper to serve on a jury in my hometown, where i still know a lot of the coppers, and the villans? A i really going to be able to take an impartial and uncynical view on the proceedings?

From a business point of view its also a nightmare. Its open-ended, so what do i do about planning work. If i take stuff on i might have to keep pushing it back. If i dont take stuff on im left with no work. As well as losing my earnings, ive also got two apprentices, who have no transport, or tools of their own. That means i cant get them to jobs when im on jury service and i cant really leave them on their own. So i have to pay them to stay at home for as long as im on the jury.

Ive written a letter explaining it all, so shall we take a sweepstake to see what happens????

i bet the stubborn so and so's don't budge.

 my work colleague copped out by claiming a bad back and that sitting for any length of time would be torture.

You can get off it with a half decent reason. Or send in your apprentice as you and get him to claim for YOUR loss of earnings

Last time I did it I was sitting in the jury waiting area all week reading a book, didn't get called once!

self employed ?

you have the right to ask to be excused if you work by yourself etc etc

I HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED TO DO IT AND WONDERED WHY AS I APPROACH 50

WHY DO SOME GET PICKED AND NOT OTHERS ? HAVE A D & D CHARGE FROM WHEN I WAS 18 ,SURELY THAT ISNT THE REASON WHY A GOOD SOUND MEMBER OF SOCIETY APPEARS TO BE BARRED FROM JURY SERVICE

I did it when i was a week past 18 - total waste - what did I know at that age?

If you want to be excused Thermo simply vote guilty by post ... That should do it

Ive already god knows how many hours of my life sitting around in courts wasting time already. Ive just got to hope the letter gets me out of it. I know its a civic duty, but i think ive done enough of that already!

I got out of Jury service last year. Wrote them a letter explaining that as a self employed person it would seriously impact on my business and earnings, so you stand a good chance of getting out of it.

Tell them that as an ex-copper you've lost all faith in the legal system and that you feel that it would be in no one's interest for you to participate. Also mention you have a wind problem and are narcoleptic. ;)
