Thanks for the info, will get a socket tester, funny you should say about the extension lead, our tumble dryer ( which invariably is running as well as the WM -we have two kids!) is run by an extension lead and may well be the root of the problem. cheers (':)')

we have the weirdest thing happening. if our W/Machine is on and we wash our hands under the kitchen tap it feels like we are washing them in shards of glass but not when the machine is off. Can anyone explain this phenomenon. the w/m and kitchen tap are supplied by the mains and the hot feed...
