Thank you all! I think I will change the width of the extension so that it conforms to the requirements. I will lose a foot or so but probably better to avoid all the hassle.

It's odd because over the road from us, about 4 years ago, the homeowners there did the same thing. They have extended to the side more than half the width of the existing house. I'm hoping I will be able to do the same.

After reading the document it seems that what I am proposing may not necessarily be ruled out but just needs to go through the application process for a decision

Yeah, tried the flyers approach and it gets you hardly any results as I suppose when you think about it you are just posting through doors at random.
