A mate of mine who played in a band got shock off a mains plug when setting up on stage ..... It was a cable with a mains plug on both ends! When we moved into our current home ... I found one of the sockets in the kitchen was on the end of a very significant T&E cable traight back to the...

    House Let - PAT test

Circa 1985 house with original wiring / conventional fused consumer unit. The letting agent has just sent an electrician round to test. He says the electric shower circuit must have an RCD, under no circumstances should the tennent use the shower till its done ... and he wants £200 to do it...

Routing 12v wiring to LED lights

Fair point about the heat... I guess there are some other options open to me that I would never consider for a mains cable ... like running the cable down the corner of the room and behind the skirting board .... does that sound any better?

Routing 12v wiring to LED lights

I am installing 12v LED lighting in a shower room. They will be wall mounted 500mm from the floor. The associated transformer will be in the loft. Whilst I am sure it is good practice to follow normal safe zone rules for the 12v wiring, am I required to do so? I would like to run the cables in...

    knocking through external wall

Sorry to camp out on this post but I have just done exactly as above, but am not sure how I close the cavitiy along the floor. The DPC is about an inch below floor level. Unguided I would fill the cavity with concrete, cover the two courses and cavity with a 250mm DPC and concrete over to...

    Getting an oil boiler commissioned

Following on from a previous post where I confirmed my 1999 Heatslave 15/19 is O.K to install into a new extension and that my best course of action was to use a local heating engineer to commission ...... As far as I am aware the installation is A1. New single peice oil pipe from the tank...

TT systems and cu set ups

If you can't get one to fit in the CU you can fit one in a separate enclosure between the meter and the CU. If you decide to change your CU make sure you can get a suitable RCD for it (Not all manufacturers supply them)

Worcester Heatslave 15/19 in new extension

I'm after a bit of advice on my Heatslave 15/19. It was originally installed during 2000 in a lean to boiler room at the back of our 1960 bungalow. During 2006 we removed the boiler, knocked down the lean to and built an extension (Building regs signed off in 2004). The boiler was reinstalled in...

How to fit semi recessed basins in a worksurface?

Just opened to the box to examine my shiny new semi recessed bathroom basin. I plan to fit it into a length of 360mm bathroom worktop on cupboards ..... but there are no fitting instructions and no apparent means of fixing (except a worksurface cutting template) Looks like the contact area with...

    House extension - building quotes

I did foundations, drainage and floor myself. Employed a builder and carpenter for about 6 weeks on day rate for walls / roof / rendering. I bought all the parts (You should be able to negotiate as good a deal from the builders merchant as any builder for a decent size project). Saved loads...
