Late reply but just wanted to say thanks for explaining as this is exactly what the problem was. Yes I am a plumbing novice but the actual plumber himself also didn't realise this and had to get his assistant to show him that the center of the tap was orientated wrong!

I have attached two photos, the first showing the cold water position and the second showing hot water. I basically want it so you turn the top lever all way left instead of right.
when you lift up the top lever you get cold water by default, if you want hot water you have to turn it anti clockwise to your right. It doesn't turn left at all. I want it to do the opposite, turn it clockwise to your left get hot water.
It's a single hot water tap that is leaking. I took the front cap off but the gap is really small so I am not sure how I get into the tap to change the washer?

So I took some paint and plaster off one part of the wall and it’s dry now however the walls above it has the white powder dripping. Remove the paint? Use some kind of breathable plaster?
