Safe to coil up Power leads?

Being a neat freak at work I have ordered a cage to go under my desk. Most computer power leads are 2m long Question: - is it safe to use cable ties or something to put them in "figure of 8" for example to try to clean up the excess. i.e. when power is flowing does it make it too hot coiled up ?

    Garage light -no earth

Thanks. Just had a look at the old light and the earth on that is attached with a small washer to a metal reflector plate. I could use that washer to go over the screw attaching it to the wall and put the earth round that ? ..or as you say you a plastic connector block?

    Garage light -no earth

Bulkhead light on garage fitted by Electrician years ago has died. I have purchased a replacement and it has no earth - instructions: Class II double insulated, earth is not required If the existing feed cable has an earth what should I do with it?. Is it enough to simply cut the exposed copper...

Ticking from hot pipe under flooboards

Thanks Andrew - never heard of the stuff. Presumably you only need to put it around the pipe inside the joists i.e. not the whole length of pipe?

Ticking from hot pipe under flooboards

Been worried about a dripping noise under floorboard in bedroom. Being going on for months but can't see any patches from below. Thought it was central heating but appears not. It only occurs after running hot tap in kitchen (pipe runs through bedroom down to kitchen). I had a plumber in who...

    Tracing drip in Central Heating

For last 2-3 months I can hear a drip under floorboards in bedroom/landing when all is quiet about every 20-30 seconds. I've had floorboards up and can't see any problem. Also no patches on ceiling below. However, the pressure has dropped on the boiler - not much about 1/2 to 3/4 bar in about 6...

    Need to clear blocked downpipe

Just to update this I had another go at this today - scrapped out as much earth as I could and then used a long stick to push down - I was surprised to see it go down at least another 2 foot below the ground - I then poured about 1/2 gallon water from watering can and I could hear it gurgling...

    Need to clear blocked downpipe

Thanks Hugh - house was built in 1956 I believe. As I said it is very close to the main drainage from kitchen so I had always assumed it just fed into it. I do suspect the sewage also joins into it since the toilet downpipe is also on the same side of the house

    Need to clear blocked downpipe

I am trying to replace old cast-iron downpipe with plastic. It is concreted in the ground but I found it lifted out from the lower bracket leaving about 12-15" above ground. What's left is completely full of gunk - earth and rusted iron. I have removed out what I can to ground level but it is...

    boxing in downpipes

I had new central heating system installed recently. The two downpipes come down through the lounge - I measure about 22mm ??. I'd like to hide or box them in but when the system is running they are extremely hot to the touch. So:- 1) Is it safe to box them in - what happens to the heat? i.e...

    Gutter downpipe into concrete

Thanks for the tip Hugh - I appreciate it I see this only as a temporary measure. Eventually the garage will be converted with a downstairs cloakroom added . Hopefully then the condensate can be combined to the toilet waste going straight to the external drainage system

    Gutter downpipe into concrete

Thanks for the replies - if it doesn't exhaust into the downpipe the only other option is to put into a soakaway in the ground. Looking at the boiler installation guide (Worcester Greenstar) it says there should be " an air break must be installed in the 43mm pipe work, between the boiler...

    Converting loft hatch

I have an old loft hatch that simply sits in a frame and pushes up to open and therefore have to use an external step-ladder to reach. I want to have a loft ladder which means changing the hatch to a hinged opening. Not being a carpenter I'm wondering how to do this. I was wondering if I could...
