Condensing boiler - heating & water on at the same time

We have a condensing boiler - don't use the timer, just turn heating/water on as and when required. I put both on at the same time first thing in the morning for an hour or so. Perhaps a silly question, but would this work out more expensive than just turning one of them on? We do have a...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Thank you - yes, I think this is the best/most cost effective solution as the tank and pipes are right near the loft hatch. All we'll have to worry about then is another leak from our heavily lagged storage tank!

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Some good suggestions and I'm really grateful for all replies. I'll have a chat with my husband later and see what he thinks. I know he's reluctant to put anything electrical up there (as I am), but maybe some sort of vent in the loft hatch, together with the weather-station thingie would put...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Thanks. I think we're moving away from my original post somewhat. I'm not even sure we still have a condensation problem any more as (I think) it's been OK up there for the last couple of years moisture wise. The imminent problem is being able to keep the temperature above freezing during...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

This was a potoential problem after the insulation was installed, but my husband went up there and put it right on advice from the insulation company's "Technical Expert". I really think we've covered most things ...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

We did have a fan discharging air straight into the loft for a day or so when we had our bathroom decorated years ago, but had it checked out straight away and put right, so we know that isn't the problem. Believe me, we have been into this thoroughly and had plenty of advice over the years...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

We also find it difficult to accept that no-one can tell us why for definite and it's been put down to the "direction of the house". We even went to the expense of having 6 venting tiles installed to try and cure the problem (before the air bricks were put in) and they made no difference...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

We had (extra) insulation fitted when we moved in 9 years ago - to make it 10" I think. After a short time, we started to get dripping bedroom ceilings, the condensation was so bad. We had the "technical expert" out eventually from the insulation company who went up there and said we lived in...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Thanks for all the replies - I'll have a chat with my other half. If we could only have a combi boiler we wouldn't have this problem, but no-one will install one as we have pipes under concrete floors. Our loft is the bane of our lives and has caused us so many problems/worries over the last...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

No, there's no insulation under the tank.

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Yes, it has a plastic cover. The two air bricks were installed by the insulation company a few years ago in a last ditch attempt to solve our condensation problem. No, they cannot be closed in winter. Unfortunately we have no children/relatives nearby to help with these problems.

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Thanks both. We're really not that bothered about about heat escaping and the extra cost involved, just making life as easy as possible for us and trying to prevent problems with frozen pipes that we've had previously. Although our pipes are now well lagged, our plumber has recommended we...

    Opening loft hatch in winter

Without going into too much detail, we've had numerous problems with our tiny and perhaps "over-insulated" loft, resulting in the need to open our (standard) loft hatch slightly in winter as a precaution to prevent pipes freezing (which they have in the past). We have the cold water storage...

Does water heating up quicker with heating turned off?

We have a Baxi condensing boiler. The heating is on most of the time in this cold weather and we turn the heating on for half an hour on a daily basis. I have a theory that the water heats up quicker if we turn the heating off ... my partner disagrees. Can someone please help us solve the...
