Assuming you have not that many holes ... just buy a tube of polyfilla or similar ... then get a test pot of magnolia as it goes a long way, rather than buying a load of the stuff. Fill holes .. rub down when dry and paint over. You could do a thinned down coat for the first covering if you...

What is the best way to remove gloss paint off a victorian(ish) fireplace. It is painted up to the wooden surround and right up to the mantlepiece. Beneath the paint are small red bricks. Heat gun and scrape, or messy Nitromors :?:

The hollow sounding plaster has lost its adhesion to the wall (blown). In my view you either remove and replace the suspect areas or clap on 1200 lining paper or (after sorting the bown areas ) skim the whole lot of it, if it is all looking old.

I started the the hard way ..... studied 60 minute makeovers on TV and Cowboy builders, and never been out of work since. Needed a fast van tho :-)

Remove the silicon and replace it. No sealer remains free of mould in a bathroom in the long term.

Yes . just sand down to a fine edge anywhere and the paint will do the rest. The new plaster will be very thin at the edges and sometimes the use of a roller will "suck" the new plaster off. I usually brush paint these fine new plaster edges.
