Water hammer; is it the tap?

Loud hammer noise when one particular hot tap is turned on. Clears quickly when tap is fully opened, or when a hot tap in the next room is opened. Sounds like the hammering is at or near the tap itself. Last night I was awoken by a hammer which sounded like it wasn't going to stop. I found the...

    Fitting internal pvc door

I have a pvc door on order for bathroom to replace a badly warped wooden one. I'll need to cut 20mm off the top or bottom to fit. Now I'm worried that might ruin the door. Any views please? Door is coming from B&Q (cheap range!). Nothing on their web page to say you can't cut it to fit.

    Bath needs grab handles

Good idea from Big-all; I think there's room for a 2x2. This bath is a good solid one, quite thick walls. Are we sure it's made of acrylic or is there any other material in general use? Can't find a maker's name. PS. Agile: I got a pair of grab handles from a helpful bloke at Plumb Center...

    Bath needs grab handles

Thanks to all. I'm only planning a smallish handle for the bath, like those that are standard fit on many baths, with a beefier one on the wall. Very useful link from Bosswhite - thanks.

    Bath needs grab handles

Our bath has no grab handles. It's quite a deep bath, and my wife (elderly arthritis sufferer) has difficulty getting out of it. I thought of suction handles, but wouldn't trust them. Proposal: fit one handle on the wall (drill through tiles to a wall stud) -- not too much of a problem -- and...

RCD trips when I switch off

I've taken the surge protector out of the setup; no trips yet! (I've used it without problem for a couple of years -- but I moved house 4 months ago; the RCD in this house is more modern and therefore perhaps much more sensitive). I've also tried unplugging the printer, the display, etc etc...

RCD trips when I switch off

JohnW2: thanks. It's a trailing set of sockets with surge and spike protection. I've had it a couple of years with no problem, but I'll remove it & see what happens. This being an intermittent fault, it may take a while!

RCD trips when I switch off

Thanks to all. JohnW2: I'd forgotten about the switch on the power unit itself. I used that several times & it was OK. Then I used the wall switch and it tripped. Ricicle: I'll try another wall socket next.

RCD trips when I switch off

The RCD sometimes trips (3 or 4 times in two weeks) when I switch off at a particular wall socket. My computer’s plugged in there, via a surge-protection socket. I always shut the computer down using the Windows ‘turn off’ menu, then when it’s stopped, I switch off at the wall. It’s that last...

Changing tap washer: can't even get the handle off!

AlanE: boiling water: good idea which I hadn't thought of, but it didn't work. Terence7556: wise words; life's too short to mess around. New taps it is. Thinks: why don't they make a square head to the shaft instead of all those little splines? Would come off easier. Thanks to both of you!

Changing tap washer: can't even get the handle off!

Stuck at first base (with a conventional old style basin tap; I have a new core unit waiting to install, and thought it would be easy!) Yes, I undid the grub screw. The handle is rock solid. Tried limescale remover and WD-40. Any ideas please?

Secondary double glazing - oriel windows

In this old house, the sitting room has two oriel windows – sort of bay windows projecting out beyond the external wall. Single-glazed on 3 sides, uninsulated above & below. The window sills are about 1m by 70cm, so as you can imagine they let plenty of cold draughts into the room. Condensation...

    Copper Line Test

AlanE: I have the same problem you had back in July. Did BT rectify it and if so did they charge you? Thanks (also thanks to others for explaining the problem).
