    Lintel replacement

Hi all, I have a *very* rotten lintel above a 2m wide window which *used to* do the job of supporting the roof above with the rafters sitting on top of the lintel. I think the lintel could be made smaller when being replaced but curious to know if there are any standards for lintel sizes...

    Lintel for new doorway

Hi all, I am looking to knock a hole through an existing wall to from a new doorway and wondered if anyone had any advice on what type/size of lintel I might use. There is nothing on top of the wall where I want to make my hole other than ceiling joists that hold up a plasterboard ceiling...

    Refurbishing Flat roof

Hi, I have a small flat roof dormer window which I believe was built about 30 years ago and looks like it has bitumen on it and a mineral felt. Although the roof isn't leaking I am having some work done on an adjoining roof and I would like to refurb the flat roof so that it lasts for another...

    Hanging ledge and brace doors

Hi, I'm about to buy some pine ledge and brace internal doors but was wondering if I am able to hang these using regular hinges on to the door lining? My thinking was that if the doors open inwards and the ledge and brace side is in the room then I could simply mount the hinges on the...

What kind of bad surprises behind the wall paper ?

There doesn't tend to be anything nasty behind wallpaper, the most likely issues you will come across is either a) flaky plaster which has to come off and be patched and b) shody patch work of something like electric cable runs.... in most cases though there really isn't anything to worry about...

    Hardboard in an ensuite bathroom

Hi all, I've recently put 3mm hardboard down on my upstairs floors just to take some of the uneveniness and ridges out of my old floorboards as I'm going to be laying carpet shortly. My question is can I use the hardboard in my ensuite area (it's having vinyl fitted over the top) or will...

    Laying hardboard

Hi, I have three rooms in which I want to lay hardboard to avoid any issues when laying vinyl in the bathroom and underlay and carpet in the other rooms. My issue is how to being the job.. clearly my walls are well "out of true" so am I best to start with a known straight line and work...

Hi All, A dilema for you all for which you might be able to give me some ideas. After removing some built in cupboards from rooms in my house I am left with some holes in the ceiling where the cupboard framework has taken chunks out of the ceiling.... e.g. imagine a 2 inch square hole in a...

    Tiling over WBP plywood

Thanks for the info.. FYI: yes it's 12.5mm ply and well supported so I can't imagine there will be any issues. It is for the back of a shower wall though I wondered if there are any good tanking (paints?) that I should be using or can I just wander to the local DIY shop and pluck something...

    Painting tiles

Hi, I've painted over tiles twice now when I've moved into houses... admittedly I've only done it was a temporary solution (of course there is no such thing as temporary when it comes to my DIY). FYI, both times I've just under a regular undercoat and then a satin gloss... primarily as I...
