Is that ring made of timber? Silly - rip it out - you can work off the slightly uneven slab and pack underneath it. I don't think all hope is lost :) Good luck tomorrow!

Ah, I'm speaking from past personal bad experience. It's frustrating doing things twice! Perhaps make your mix just slightly wetter next time as well to prevent it drying too quickly. Good luck!
Contact your local agricultural supplier and consider polyester coated metal roofing. Again it will be more expensive than felt but will last many years! You get it in various colours and profiles compared to the original wavy galvanised finish.
I'd agree - sounds cheap! I just had a chimney reharled with a few slates replaced and that was £1176 by itself. That was the cheapest quote for the work too.
Could well be a piece of rebar - trying a metal drill bit may work or you can get multi drill bits these days:
