The shift mech ontop of the gearbox that the cables attach to seizes. It gets water running over it from off the scuttle panel. If it is not to bad you can pull the mech upwards and clean what you can get at of the shaft and then grease it.
This is if it is a fwd modle though?
The throttle body causes problems on these cars. They can gum up, and are prone to going out of sinc. A good clean and/or re-setting might cure it. Re-setting need to be done with diagnostic equipment.

My controller for my boiler is a basic on/off timer with a hot water stat, but no central heating stat. I have TRV's on all my rads except the bathroom. Is this setup okay/sufficient or would it be better to have a room thermostat?
The diesel pumps are known to chew them selves up on these. Have a look inside the fuel filter and see if there is any swarf in the bottom of the housing.
Jumping out of gear could be the dog bone shape mount at the rear of the box worn allowing excessive movement.
Or it could be a worn selector fork inside the box :cry:
