    Extension Floor Advice

Mad, probably. I was just thinking of the cost saving, of removing old floor and additional new materials! In the second scenario I meant, in the original footprint leave existing floor as it currently is, and only lay new floor in the extension. There is precedence for this in B/R, as you can...

    Extension Floor Advice

I'm extending the kitchen, which has a solid concrete flood, and wanted a bit of advice. The current floor is the original victorian one, so no dpc etc. Should I dig up the existing floor and lay a new floor for the whole room? Or Should I just put a new floor down to the same level in the...

    bathroom condensation damp

Hello all, I'm about to rip out my old bathroom suit/tiling etc and renew, however as it currently stands the bathroom suffers from a lot of condensation based damp on the 2 external walls. (victorian single skin walls) I was wondering what people thought of my plan, and whether it will cure...

dot and dab or Batten a Wall?

I'm assuming your kitchen has 2 internal & 2 external walls by what you've described. At 2.7 high, by 8m long & 2.5m wide you've got just over 28sq meters of uninsulated single skin wall. In winter that's going to be cold or more likely you'll be heating it a lot more than you'd need to with...

dot and dab or Batten a Wall?

Personally would use 50mm or deeper batterns to put insulation between. Also make sure it's talinised wood to avoid rot. Then put a non permeable membrane on warm side of insulation and attach boards.

dot and dab or Batten a Wall?

Battern, with 50mm insulation board between the batterns and then board over.

    Coal shed roof

If you look at the image of my neighbours house you'll see what I mean by how much the roof needs raising by. http://m.pinterest.com/pin/130956301637811622/

    Coal shed roof

On the rear of my victorian house is what use to be coal shed/outside toilet. The exterior doors have been bricked up & a door has been added for internal access to create a utility, the internal ceiling height is currently 2.2m. The roof is in need of replacing and I was hoping that...

    Unknown Vents

Currently: - double glazing, no trickle vents - no gas fires (there used to be 2) only one unused open fire - gas fired central heating - boiler in utility. - through living room/dining room. Used to be one room, gas fires took out at same time as knock through. - stairs / front door in...

    Unknown Vents

But there is already ventilation from the air bricks around the house. Plus as I said no other house on the street has these & they are all identical build Victorian terraces.

    My Loft

Main reason for wanting to board out at rafter level as well was so I could keep stuff in the loft without it getting filthy.

    Unknown Vents

There is an identical vent at the front of the house, hence vents. They are in the corner of the dining room, and corner of living room, and the inside is a sliding vent like this one. I was thinking maybe they were put in when gas fires were installed for additional ventilation.

    My Loft

I don't think it had any torching on it, could be wrong, this is a better picture of the roof. http://pinterest.com/pin/130956301637424320/ Roof is in pretty much perfect condition so not much sense in replacing it. I was intending on leaving an air gap between the insulation board and...

    Unknown Vents

I mentioned in my previous post that our new house was rather cold throughout winter & I'm trying to improve the outlook for next winter. We have a through living/dining room and at both the front and rear of the house there are rather drafty vents, ones that don't appear on any of the other...

    My Loft

Having lived through a rather chilly first winter in our new home I'm making it a priority this summer to tackle the loft insulation, or more precisely the lack of loft insulation. We live in a late victorian, mid terrace house which was constructed without roofing felt; as was the norm in...
