Can you add extra height to a garage before changing roof?

Thanks Richard. I just wondered if it was possible to do without demolishing and rebuilding the garage. I can see planning permission has been granted for very similar places locally although I think that the ones applied for mean to demolish and start again. What is involved in making the...

Can you add extra height to a garage before changing roof?

I have a single storey detached garage with a flat roof, (c 4m x7m). I would like to have the roof replaced with a pitched roof; and also, if possible, raise the height of the garage to provide a sort of small loft floor area as a little hobby room. The walls are concrete block inside...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

I suppose the only drawback in making just a walkway of wet ufh is that the whole floor will need to be raised higher to accommodate the pipes.

Design is certainly key and I appreciate all of your help. Is it practical to have rads in each room plus a wet UFH just along the main walkway from the bed to the bathroom, just to warm up the tiled floor for bare feet?

is that in case of leaks? I like the idea of ufh downstairs with floor tiles and radiators upstairs, but I have a bedroom downstairs and the lounge is upstairs. Does the slow warm up times of wet underfloor heating mean it is more unsuitable for a bedroom since you only want it toasty to go...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

I hadn't heard of the makes Rinnai or Viessman before, are they as good as Vaillant or Baxi? I looked up the 222f and it sounds impressive, I also saw the Viessman Vitodens 343-F which has integral solar cylinder and solar control unit. Don't know how much they are though, I couldn't find out...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

Is it practical to have some rooms with warm water underfloor heating and some rooms with radiators? Also, which is the best combi boiler for this? The Heatmiser system from the earlier link looks fab but expensive, do you know what the average set up cost of a system like that would be?

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

No, I realise now that the makers literature is biased and that gas is cheaper - I wasn't doubting you just explaining why I first thought it was a good idea. I would like individual controls so that I don't have to heat the whole house at the same time. The house insulation is great but...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

wants & needs… warm house (250m2) all day (with controllable temps in each room) no more than 2 baths or showers in one day (almost never even at the same time) hot water to wash hands, wash up sports car

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

I currently pay about £2k a year for gas and electric but the system is inefficient. I can budget for any type of system but it needs to be planned for and budgeted before the floors come up and the tiles laid. So far, I really get the hint :D from you all that gas is cheaper although...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

If I keep gas, I will need a new boiler and all new radiators and controls. The existing system has really had it. You suggest a wet underfloor heating - which I suppose will be for the tiled floor - but surely it has more risks of leaking, blocking, bubbling in the pipes or cracking the...

Big house, considering moving away from gas to electric only

I have a big house (250m2) which is in need of total renovation and I am planning the new design. Currently there is an old gas central heating system with loft tank, immersion tank and several pumps needed to push the water around etc. 16 radiators. The house is well insulated. Despite...
