Evening all,

Looking to replace my 25yr wired alarm system myself. Would you recommend Texecom premier or Scantronic and I'll probably need an remote expander to replace the one on the first floor.

Any tips on installing and pitfalls very welcomed. Brewtime seem to do good prices.

Texecom probably more flexible , but the scantronic may be easier for a diy job .

You may find difficult to get end user technical support directly from Scantronic but Texecom is much friendly about it.

Thanks Sparky and Serg. I'll no doubt need a lot of support in trying to do this.

I guess another question would be how do I easily trace the wires. The current box is powered down with all the cables coming in, how best to find out with cables link to say PIRs or Remote panels?

Usually terminals on pcb are marked so it says what goes where, sometimes cables are labled as well. If any trouble - use multimeeter to test cores. Open the box and you will see.

That is because Scantronic is a professional make, not a professional/DiY system like Texecom.

There is a difference.

So ended up buying Texecom.
£340 for the lot so will no doubt be back on here when I struggle to get the thing wired up!

Thanks all for the advice.

Hello:

This post is a good one for me.
My father in law who works in telecoms used to install Scantronic systems in my old house and his own. I'm not too technical but I have been watching and assisting on those installations so I have some idea.

I recently moved house and the old alarm system doesn't work.
He suggested I try something newer, so after some research I decided to go with Texecom.
Side note: I am not sure if it is just us, but we have the impression that Scantronic is slightly old now, I could be totally wrong and I am sure I will hear someone respond to this if I am, but I decided to try something new.

I've just finished installing it a couple of days ago (without his help) and I am really pleased. It was straightforward to make the connections on the end panel as well as programming.
If you look up my other posts you'll see more details.

However I did spend a lot of time pre-reading the installation manual and made sure I was very familiar with all the concepts etc.

I too had to trace wired from the old system to minimse re-wiring. Wires were not labeled at all. So I used a multi meter to not only identify the cables but also check they were still working. That was something new for me but very easy thing to do.

The other thing is that I needed to extend the existing alarm cables, so again I had to become familiar with soldering and using heat shrink covering material, which again was easy but new for me.

Hope this was useful and good luck, the forum is really good when you have any specific questions.
