Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

I absolutely do John, ANY conductor that is not connected to the circuit can become charged by mutual inductance, I have seen it happen. Additionally, a fault may be someone screwing into a cable, you are I'm sure aware that it sometimes does not result in a big bang and tripping things...

Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

EAWR. See section 8 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/635/made#:~:text=11.,be%20necessary%20to%20prevent%20danger. I always terminate them and if they are an unused conductor then they are identified as such at both ends, earthed at the supply end.

    3 phase distribution question

Whilst your running your cables for your new supplies, consider also running several CAT6 or above internet cables, do not rely on wifi.

    Amazon UK delivery problems?

To think that today (Sunday) I can order something and it's delivered tomorrow (Monday) probably in the evening. This is not something I could have expected 10+ years ago. If you order something like a desktop PC from Amazon then you have to be very specific on delivery instructions AND make...

No one 'wants' to be on benefits!

Whilst I have worked since I was 16, I was on family credit for many years, I often had to turn down a pay rise because it meant I would lose much much more in family credit & all the benefits that came with it.

No one 'wants' to be on benefits!

My own brother in law was on benefits when he met my sister and they both remained on it for many years, it's only since he drunk himself to death that she has got a job. Even then they live in a large semi detached council house (albeit a rough estate) and probably still gets some benefits...

    Anyone Into Theme Parks?

I'm not. They are the most unexciting trashy places going.

No one 'wants' to be on benefits!

I have met several that wanted to be on benefits, to be given a council house, to not have to go to work for it. At times I wish I did not have to go to work and could get paid to sit on my arris. :)

    Pedestrian safety aid

The "carry a brick across the crossing" idea sound good but in reality drivers would have to put their phone down and look up/forward for someone to actually be seen carrying a brick. :)

    Dogs don’t like postmen!

I think they probably have a bunch of lawyers lined up to take out claims against the owners. https://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/analysis/is-postal-workers-pet-hate-driving-dog-related-public-liability-claims/1440364.article Home insurance may cover it, depending upon the policy. I simply have...

    How are your potholes?

Our potholes here in Rossendale are far far worse than this mere dimple in the road yet ours are not being repaired.

Can anyone give me an idea on how I could get a staircase up to the loft without a dormer?

Why does your old mother need to go up into her loft? I can see that it's empty, does she need to use the space for storage stuff that she cannot store elsewhere more accessable? My mother in law has finally given up going up there, now she will wait until one of us young uns are around so we...

    Is There a Worklessness Crisis?

I had an apprentice at work, for whatever reason he is no longer with us so I am need of either a new apprentice or an experienced electrical assembler. Apparently the boss has tried but is struggling to find someone. That said I have a 26yr old son that has been unable to find employment...

    Connecting wires in conduit

Turn the power off, tighten up the screws in the choc bloc then turn the power back on. If it's been fine for umpty years it has a good chance of being fine for umpty more.

    Are these electrics safe?

I would get the decorating put back until after the rewire. a rewire can make a heck of a mess to your walls and patching up will be seen if not done well so IMHO I'd decorate after. Also, plan what sockets you want and where they will go in each room, plan also for some ethernet cable points...

    High labour rates for boilers

I wasn't suggesting anyone actually DIY it, just that the high cost would be the reason why some will DIY it.

Just bear in mind that it will no longer work - at all. So any deliveries, mailman etc. you will not know.
