what ~50mm screed over a dpc?

Hi, I'm patching a 4'x4' section of a concrete floor. I'm patching new dpc to the old (trying to seal the edges). This will leave this dpc covered area ~50mm lower than the surrounding floor. Under the dpc is rough concrete. What can I patch the finished floor with? ~50mm thick, dpc...

    combi condensate through a trap?

Hi, Newly installed Worcester Bosch 38cdi combi boiler. I have the condensate pipe, and pressure relief pipes to connect to a drain. By chance, there is the end of a 110mm soil pipe in almost exactly the right place. My plumber has connected a single 40mm drain to take both the condensate...

    closing the cavity

Hi, I'm converting a window into French windows, and have cut down and removed the surplus brickwork. The French doors will fit into the outer skin, leaving a cavity before the inner skin. We'd like to finish the floor right up to the French windows, across the cavity. How do I close the...

Stripped pine bannister - wax it? oil? ...varnish??

Hi all, We've stripped/sanded our stair bannister (hand-rails, uprights etc) back to bare pine. It's been previously painted, and it's ~35 years old. The finish now is sanded down, and it's a darkish pine colour purely due to its age. We like the natural wood, and want to finish it with a...

New water main to increase pressure/flow

Hi all, Water pressure and flow rate are not brilliant, British Gas said the flow is too low for a combi-boiler. So I fancy replacing the very old (not lead) water main with 25mm or 32mm mdpe. I know all the caveats, 750mm deep, lined with sand, keep the trench open until inspected etc. Few...

T4 or T5 fluorescent link lights - confused!

Hi, We currently have some old T5 fluorescent lights under our kitchen units, fitted by a previous occupier. The tube lengths are non-standard, and replacement tubes cost ~£8-15 each each (depending on length) - when you can get them. I'm going to change the lighting under the units (and put...

    mini-digger hire

hi all. I'm considering hiring a mini-digger. Would plan to have it for a day, and dig foundations (and excavate for the concrete slab) for a ~3m x ~3m single story utility room. Could also use it for other things, like installing a land-drain and replacing my water main pipe. Anyway...

    Some postcrete questions (thermo?)

Hi all, I'm in the process of digging out some 30 year old 8' leylandii, removing an old wood fence and replacing it with larchlap panels and concrete posts. Back-breaking! 8' posts, 2' hole dug narrow and deep, then using postcrete. Postcrete has been going in dry (~1.5 bags per hole)...

d/g windows steamed - not the seal

Hi all, '70s house, upvc d/g ~20 years old and steams up in the mornings. The condensation is on the inside (of the house), and not between the panes. This happens on quite a few of our windows. Don't think it's the seals, anybody any idea how to prevent this happening? Ta! Andy
