    Preparing external window cills

I'm preparing to paint my window frames. I've scraped off all the flaking paint from the window cill (outside), it's left me with the old paint rubbed down ready to paint, but there's lots of areas where the paint has come off completely leaving bare wood. If I paint over everything it won't...

    Seems expensive £?

I've stripped the wallpaper off our bedroom and some of the plaster has come off one wall to reveal the original block work, about 5 sqm. After that's been fixed I want the complete room skimmed, total area is 20 sqm. I've had a guy look at it, he said he will come round and 'hardwall' the 5...

    Replacing a rotten window cill

I've removed all the wet rot from our window cill. I suppose I should now get a new cill and cut down the length, and just connect it to the existing cill, using glue and screws? Thing is, the existing cill is all jaggered and rough (as per the picture) so my new (cleanly cut) cill won't...

    Lifting turf and re-laying

I want to lower an area of my lawn (about 10sqm). I'm thinking of carefully cutting the turf with a half moon tool, getting under the turf with a shovel and putting it to one side, then scrape some of the top soil away (about 50mm), then put the turf back. I'm just concerned the finished...

    Using multifinish

My sister has a very small peice of wall, on the wall there is a small area (500mm x 500mm) where the plaster has blown, the depth of the damage is 3mm. I can skim small areas so have agreed to go round tomorrow and sort it out. Reading on this site, I should use bonding to fill the hole...

    Preparing for new turf

I'm not sure the picture shows my existing ground too well. Basically the garden has lumps and bumps, a few weeds, and areas where grass is coming through. We want to raise the garden 100mm by bringing in screened top-soil. I'm guessing I should go across the whole garden removing all...

    Wallpapering over lining paper

I have cross-lined a wall ready to wallpaper. I usually paste the wall as well as the wallpaper, so I can slide it into position when it's on the wall. Should I paste the lining paper, as well as the wallpaper? I'm just concerned too much paste may cause the lining paper to bubble or...

    Glue and skim

In regards to this picture, can someone tell me if this is correct please? First scape all the loose paper, paint etc off the wall and clean with sugar soap. Then; 1. Tape the joints 2. Fill the low areas and gaps with bonding 3. Paint with 2 coats of PVA; 1st coat 5:1' 2nd coat 3:1...

    Is this correct

Is this correct? Coat the area with 2 coats of PVA Use multifinish, 2 coats I guess I just grade the multi down to nothing as I get a little way along the all, then sand the edges when it's dry? Some of the wall has divets about 50mm diameter, and 10mm deep, will the multi fill these...

    Removing small wall

I'm about to remove a small wall (it's not structural). It's a very old building with thick, solid masonary walls. After I've taken it out I want to just make it tidy before deciding what to do next. I'm anticipating bits of small brick will come loose, and they'll be bits sticking out...

    Thickness of multifinish

I've built a partition in a bedroom, but it's not perfectly vertical. The stud/plasterboard is positioned next to a window, theres a gap of about 8mm between the new wall and the return on the window (at the top), but the partition is only about 3mm away at the bottom of the window return...

    Bit confused about filling

I've been trying to understand what to use to fill cracks, holes etc. It seems you can use polyfilla, one coat, hardwall, easy fill, bonding, multifinish... Is there a simple guide, what to use and when? Any help appreciated.

    Practice

My son has been on an intensive training course, learning how to plaster. He's been practising in our garage by taking wet plaster from a board and just keeps loading his trowel, then puts it back, and Repeats. He's fed up with this now, I suppose the only other thing he can do is get a...

    New grass seed

My neighbour put new grass seed down 15th September (to be precise), after a week he had lots of new grass, so I decided to copy him. I put my down 29th September, 2 weeks have passed - nothing! I kept it watered at all times. Did I narrowly miss the window? Thanks.

    New, small silver birch trees

I bought 9 small silver birch a few weeks ago. I've been so busy I've not yet prepared the area to plant, I'm hoping to get them planted this weekend. Is it too late to plant them now, I'm worried if we get a frost it will kill them? Many thanks.

    What is this?

We moved into our house a few months back (built in the 80's), I'm now trying to sort the garden out. This morning I removed a small rockery and found this; It's got stuff in it, but couldn't begin to explain what. It's not soil, it was soft when I poked it with a spade, strangely...

    Warped door

The door on our wardrobe has warped in. It's fine at the bottom, it's just the top. Any advice on how to bend it back out again please? Many thanks.

    Sanity check

I'm digging the earth out so I can have a low level deck built. As you can see quite a lot of soil has come out close to the garden wall, I want to keep removing soil right the way around to the expansion joint on the wall (shown on the picture). I just got a tiny bit concerned abut the...

    Positioning a new stud wall

I'm going to build some stud to divide the room, It will continue in line with the small wall (shown here with the horizontal wallpaper). I only want to skim the new stud up to the existing small wallpapered wall. How far back should the new stud be positioned; 2 or 3mm? Thanks.

    Removing a fire surround

I used 'no nails' to fix this surround (sandstone) to the wall. It was a newly skimmed wall. I now want to remove the surround, hopefully in one piece so we can sell it. Any advice on the best way to do this? Many thanks.
