Replacing entire ground floor suspended timber floor

Long time no see :) My daughters house had a springy floor so we suspected the joists to be rotten. They are very rotten so we have ripped them out and are left with this: The old timber was 4.75x2.75” and balanced on broken brick pieces, no DPC at all. I plan to put back in 6x2 on a...

Filling gaps where old wall meets new ceiling?

The gaps are about an inch deep and there is wood at the back. Should I screw plaster board to the wood then some rough plaster to bring it level with the old stuff before it gets skimmed?

Which 8x4 sheet for loft stairs he area?

Daughters loft storage area is ready for some flooring. We can get 8x4 sheets up there so I was thinking of using 18mm shuttering ply because it’s strong and cheap. Would there be any disadvantage of using that compared to the 18mm 8x2 sheets of the P5 chipboard?

When you fit a boiler in a full height unit..

Does the unit have no back panel and the boiler fixes straight into the wall behind? Daughter wants her boiler in a full height unit (230x60cm) in this corner. Would the heating engineer want to fit the boiler first then she can put the unit over the top or does the unit want to be in place...

Joist size for loft storage room?

My daughters house has 85 year old saggy 2.75x 1.75 ceiling joists in the bedrooms. We want to lower it and also put a platform (4 sheets of 18mm ply) up there for storage, there’s no intention for it ever to become a habitable room. On one side the span is 4.0mtrs, on the other it’s 3.0mtrs...

Is older loft roll insulation likely to be flamable?

Before my daughter drops her bedroom ceilings she will need to shift the loft insulation. It’s the old itchy yellow stuff. I’m wondering weather she would be better off bagging and binning it then putting fresh back in when the jobs done?

Reducing sound through party wall, which insulation?

2 kitchens back onto each other either side of this wall: I want to reduce the noise and plan to build a frame from 2x2, spaced 50mm off the wall, fit a full layer of 50mm acoustic slabs behind it then a further layer between the wood. I went to get some Rockwool RWA45 today but was told...

Anything better than the blue soundboards?

I want to dot and dab a party wall with something good for keeping sound in/out. Is there a better product than the blue plasterboards? Only problem is it’s the wall where the stairs are so needs to be kept thin. I won’t need many board so don’t mind paying more within reason. Thanks

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

My daughters house has lath and plaster ceilings in poor condition upstairs and there is an angle on the ceiling where the roof rafters must come slightly into the rooms. If we could lower the ceilings by about 100mm it would take that angle out, rather than simply overboarding. Could we screw...

PVA on old bricks before toothing in?

My daughters pulling a wall down but first I’m bricking up an old doorway, this will change the wall from an ‘L’ to a ‘_|’ I’m going to cut out every full brick then put them back in in the opposite direction. The old bricks are really dry so I’ve given them a quick soak. With the old bricks...

Removing a non load bearing wall?

My daughter wants a brick wall removed between the kitchen and living room. There is a wall upstairs but one isn’t ontop of the other, it’s about 600mm away parallel. I lifted a floor board upstairs and the wall isn’t directly below a joist, it runs between 2 and just has the laths sat on it...

    Snapped my door handle off

Our back door handle has always been stiff and yesterday I snapped it off. Where do I start with replacing it? The screw holes are 210mm apart and the handle is about 70/75mm down from the top screw. Will that be enough info to get a new one? I’ll ask about the stiffness once I get it...

Drainage cock ups that I see at work

I had 2 good ones this week. First one a guy cut a hole in the SVP above the washing machine connection, then jetted for a hour to unblock a collapsed rest bend that would have took 10 minutes to dig up. The result was a family in a hotel for a couple of weeks (so far) while the house is dried...

Can you ‘Over Ram’ a computer?

My son built a computer and his Ram (2x16gb 3600mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengence) was the last thing to arrive. For a week he successfully used a single stick of his brothers Ram (1x16gb 2666mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengance). When his own Ram turned up he plugged both onto his motherboard (X570 MSI A-Pro)...
