Do you want them to go back to a natural wood finish or are they going to be repainted?
It may be cheaper in the long run to remove all skirtings and architrave, carry out all the building work and upgrades then remove the rest of the paint on the door frames and any original timber that is left (with a heat gun) and then fit new skirting and new architrave.

If you can get them off a pine stripper will probably do a better job than a heat gun or sanding. Heat guns onto old paint with lead in it is 'tithe safest thing to do (lead fumes) and for the same reason sanding requires a decent quality vacuum cleaner to be connected to the sander
What was in the news then? Our house was built in 1960 and when we moved in in 1990, I found papers under the floors and the headline was all about Prince Phillip shooting his first tiger in India! Apparently they staked out a live goat and he waited in a hide until the tiger came along to eat it!The newspapers under the carpets are from 1975/76 so I bet the paint is the same age.
