Is it okay to remove Exhaust heat shield? (Ford KA)

When prepping cars for track, I tend to remove all that gubbins. It will keep you a tad warmer in winter.... :D The only thing to consider is what components it might have been protecting? Things behind it will rust more quickly with the added warmth.

Spec'ing up steel posts for a large pair of gates

Afternoon all! I'm going to put up some large gates at the end of the drive. I'll be welding frames up from steel, which will then take timber T&G panels. The gates will be around 2m high and 2m wide (each) to cover a 4m wide entrance. One of them will have a pedestrian door built into it, to...

    My sweaty garage roof

Oh, one other thought... At the ridge and eaves, where the corrugated panels meet a flat surface (at the eaves they sit on horizontal timbers which sit atop the walls, at the ridge a length of aluminium flashing laps over both sides) I have filled the gaps with expanding foams, as the damn...

    My sweaty garage roof

Hmm, OK. The roof sheets are corrugated and sit on 50mm purlins. I'd planned to fill the gaps between the purlins with the 50mm polystyrene, but clearly that might not help the problem. I don't really want to come down any furth and lose valuable headroom though. I wonder if I were to go...

    My sweaty garage roof

So, I've had this nice big prefab garage put up, and I'm insulating it. The walls are being done with 2 layers of 25mm polystyrene panelled over with 9mm ply. This all seems to be going to plan. Now, the roof.... I had entertained the idea of using various off cuts and left overs of...

    best place for a m o t sheffield

The problem is, I suspect, is that we are too relaxed in other areas, eg car maitenance, servicing and modification, to make it workable. In germany they have the two year thing, but regulations on what you can and can't do to a car are much more controlled by TUV. This is the same in a lot of...

    best place for a m o t sheffield

I don't know if it makes a difference (as it shouldn't!) but I think there is value in separation of the tester from the repairer (usually me) - ie, it doesn't matter what it fails on, the tester won't be getting the work to repair it. The place I take all my cars to are fair and have no issue...

    best place for a m o t sheffield

Wotan - what you say is correct, but lets be honest, some are more helpful than others. Some give you 24 hours for a free retest, others 2 weeks. Some will tell you it's failed and that's it, others will off helpful advice as to how you can remedy any failures yourself. Some are just plain rude...

    Using loft insulation in cavities?

Thanks everyone for the constructive replies. It seems B&Q are no longer stocking the lagging, so that kind of answers that any way. The moisture repellent issue is noted however, as well as the relative thermal properties. Some of it has been done with foil faced PIR as I picked some up from...

    Using loft insulation in cavities?

Of course. It will have a heat source (other than me!) :)

    Using loft insulation in cavities?

No, it's for a prefab garage I had built a few weeks ago, which I will be using as a workshop for cars. More a bit of something to keep the chill out rather than make it habitable. The alternative would be polystyrene. I'll be panelling over it all with ply. I did acquire some kingspan via...

    Using loft insulation in cavities?

OK, not the intended use, but it seems like such a cheap way to do my garage, with B&Q offing rolls at £3 for 5.5sqm. I'll be doing the roof of the garage with it, but my quota of 18 rolls would give me enough to do the walls too. Any obvious problems, aside from it wanting to slump over time?

Product to bond timber batons to my concrete walls?

Cheers, Nige. I was hoping that would be the answer. So Gripfil is the product to use? Good thought about degreasing. :) There is no issue with drilling into the ribs internally from a warranty perspective, but I suspect that drilling right through might cause more problems than it solves...

Product to bond timber batons to my concrete walls?

Thanks for the replies. I certainly don't need to panel the outside. The garage is brand new and looks nice already - just want it to be warmer in the winter and to have a better surface for mounting things on as well as something to sit sockets etc in and to run cabling behind.

Product to bond timber batons to my concrete walls?

OK, I have a prefab garage. The panels it's built from are 600mm wide with two vertical hollows, such that it has a thick vertical rib up the centre of each. My plan is to fill the hollows with insulation, and attach a timber baton to each of the centre ribs. I'll then insulate the gap...

How best to insulate my new garage?

I will certainly need a reasonable amount. The walls are only 2m high, but the garage is 4.5m X 11.5m, and there's the roof to do as well. If I use rockwool or similar, do I need to concern myself with moisture - ie does it need to "breathe" Thanks for the help! :)

How best to insulate my new garage?

Thanks Richard - a good tip regarding the plasterboard. The aim is to maintain a pleasant environment, not disimilar to in the main building, but afterall, it is still a prefab garage, and damp cannot be completely ruled out. So, how does OSB rate against marine ply in terms of cost and quality?

How best to insulate my new garage?

Dunno, I suppose I just like the feel of something more solid! Cosmetic isn't an issue. I won't be plastering over it - just painting it white. Structurally - it would be nice to be able to attach things soundly. For this reason I've also considered using ply for the walls instead - very easy...

How best to insulate my new garage?

I've recently had a rather splendid prefab garage put up, but it's a bit chilly in there. It will be used as a mechanic's workshop, so whilst it doesn't need to be the height of luxury, I'd like to be able to warm it up a bit, and not just end up heating the garden outside! There's also a...
