Hi Turns out that it was simply a black plastic cap inside the pipe - I pulled it out and we have a working dishwasher. Poor form from Bosch - installation guide didn't show this at all, despite showing every other step! Thanks all for your help!

Thanks footprints, I will watch out for that - I am sure it's a duff one. rocks1 - thanks for your advice, I have tried removing the black non return flap but I can't see how to do this - do I push it in to the hose? That would surely just push it back into position when the water pressure...
