    Restoring stained ash

Morning all, Hoping for some advice: I bought a second hand bed frame which has picked up a fair few knocks in its time. It's made of ash and looks to have been stained dark/or a coloured finish has been applied. Like this: (http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=19&Sub=81&PID=3661)...

    Lamp wiring help

I assume the transformer would still mean I've got the same risks, albeit a much lower voltage and less dangerous. Also would it mean I can't use a 220V bulb as I intended...

    Oak Desk

The quote I got includes the thicknessing, planing and joining so that should be ok. As you said it might be wobbly, but its going to be on carpet so won't be as bad. If it is, I'll have a think about bolting it to the wall. Still unsure as how to make sure the steel legs don't come into...

    Lamp wiring help

Thanks Robin, cutting the thread sounds doable with a die. I've been told that I can get a lamp holder with a half inch entry thread which should screw on ok. Correct about there being a steel wall plate. How would I go about earthing that? Is it absolutely necessary to earth that too even...

    Lamp wiring help

How would I go about doing that? Use a three core flex instead of a two core i.e. introduce an earth cable? Or is it the metal tubing that will need to be connected to the CPC?

    Lamp wiring help

I see, So if I was to buy the following, which is a dual core flex: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10081557/ And put it through some steel tubing and put a plug on the end, I would still need to test it in the way that we have discussed. But if I was to simply wire a plug...

    Lamp wiring help

Thanks again stillp. Unfortunately I don't have access to any equipment like that. The lamp was going to be switched on and off at the plug. Feels like I've bitten off more than I can chew with this and am risking making something very unsafe. Why is it that something like this doesn't run...

    Lamp wiring help

Thanks stillp. I suspect I'm misunderstanding as I'm such a novice on this but I didn't plan on there being any conductors of the flex. I've got and have run it through a steel tube On one end I wanted to put a lamp holder, and the other a three pin plug. So looking at your...

    Lamp wiring help

Perhaps you're right, but I'd like to learn. I envisaged that the tube would simply provide a means for the flex to run through and with the flex being insulated it would be fine. Clearly this was a bit stupid. Am I right in saying that I would need to check the insulation resistance from...

    Lamp wiring help

Yep kind of, its going to be a wall lamp which is basically a steel tube attached to a wall with a flex running through it. Something similar to this: http://assets.inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2011/05/poorprouve-lamp-537x385.jpg

    Oak Desk

Gents, Am putting together a very simple desk measuring 2' x 4' x 1.5'' from joined oak boards with some simple hairpin legs. Am being quoted around £140 for the table top from four oak boards. Just wanted to get peoples thoughts on.. 1) whether I could, or even should, do this from...

    Lamp wiring help

No reason in particular, I only had two core lying around the house so just went with that for now. Seems sensible to get some three core then. Would I then most likely need a metal lamp holder?

    Lamp wiring help

Hi folks, I've been lurking the forum for a little while now, have a few little projects on the go and am in need of some wisdom. First off, apologies if any of this is extremely obvious, I'm largely clueless on these matters. Long story short, I have a half inch thick steel tube with a...
