Insulating a garage - what are my options?

After looking around at lots of different resources I've decided to look into screwing 2x1 batten onto the walls, then fixing 50mm celotex to the battens, then vapour layer and then 11mm OSB as the top finish. I've seen different approaches to the batten technique with the insulation directly...

Insulating a garage - what are my options?

Hi everyone, I have a week off work next week and I was hoping to make a start on converting part of our garage into a bit of a play room/studio/temporary WFH office. We have a detached, mid 70's build garage, that at some point has been extended by 4 metres in length and what would have been...

Halstead Hero 50 - PCB Replacement query

Thanks for the replies everyone much appreciated. I take the safety side of things seriously hence my post - I understand a new boiler would be the best option but that's simply not an option at the moment but maybe next year. We can't go the whole winter just on the immersion heater though so...

Halstead Hero 50 - PCB Replacement query

Thanks AGAS. It's not a cheap PCB though, it's an OEM unit sold by a company that are selling of a lot of older Halstead stuff. You're right though, it is a crap boiler. We've had a couple of quotes for a new Vaillant Ecotec combi to replace the current Hero boiler but quotes are all around...

Halstead Hero 50 - PCB Replacement query

Hello, I've been advised by a heating engineer that the reason our Halstead Hero 50 boiler (installed in 2002 but we've been at the property for 2 years) has stopped working is because the PCB has had it, and I've been quoted around £450 to replace the part including labour which is roughly...

Y plan heating without room thermostat wiring - 3 port valve broken

Thanks Flameport, so it's going to be a good idea to add the Roomstat in now then :-) Is it going to be an issue having it in the same room (which is a box room that heats up quickly) as the cylinder? Thanks

Y plan heating without room thermostat wiring - 3 port valve broken

Our Drayton MA1 3 port valve has packed up and I'm looking to replace it later on today after work. The system appears to be setup as Y plan but with full TRV's and without a room stat. I took a quick look in the wiring console earlier and it looks as though whoever has installed it has added a...

    Outside lighting on pergola

Hi all, thanks for your replies much appreciated. The switch will indeed be mounted on the outside wall, hence the IP rating - I want the ability to be able to switch either outside light without having to go into the garage. DS, yes the pergola is backing onto the garage - I was planning...

    Outside lighting on pergola

I've built a new pergola to replace the old one that was attached to the back of our garage. The new one is still attached to the garage and I would like to know if it's possible to use the garage lighting circuit to supply a round 40w(ish) bulkhead in the middle of the pergola and a low wattage...

Low pressure and air in hot water supply

Thanks armo. The ballcock in the cwsc (cold water storage tank I presume?) is dripping every second or so and looks fairly old. Would that make a difference? No idea about the cylinder feed but will have a look. Thanks, james

Low pressure and air in hot water supply

We've got a 70's semi with a standard, vented gravity fed hot water setup. Ever since we moved in 6 months ago, we've had low pressure in the hot water supply but more recently we've started to get a fair bit of air in the system. If I run the downstairs kitchen hot tap (mixer type) it runs...

Loft tank sizes - too small?

Thanks Pete, much appreciated. At the moment there is no proper lid on the tank, just a small piece of plywood laid on top. I presume it would be better to have a proper fitting lid? If so, would it need to be tight fitting, or does it need to be able to breathe so to speak?

Loft tank sizes - too small?

Just looking up in our loft and thought I'd measure our header tank sizes, as the heating expansion tank looks a lot smaller than we had in our old victorian house. The central heating expansion tank is roughly 430x300x300mm (W x D x H) in size - is this too small? We have 7 rads in the...

DIY Power Flush - anyone done one?

Merry Christmas everyone :-) We've moved into a house with a heating system that's badly in need of some TLC. Most of the rads have cold spots, the system water is brown, and there's a mouldy film sitting on top of the expansion tank in the loft. I was going to do a normal system cleanse...

    Cable routing question for cooker

Hello, we're replacing our cooker and would like some advice about cable routing please. We moved into a 70's house around 6 months ago - the kitchen has been extended in the mid 80's and the cooker has moved position whilst the isolator switch is still where it was originally (around 4...

Taking out unwanted gas hob feed pipe work

Hello, We have a 22mm gas pipe outside our house that runs along the side, up the wall and into the boiler. Half way u p the wall it tees off along the wall again to feed our gas hob. We're changing to an induction hob and the gas pipe is no longer needed. There are no valves where I can...
