    Power to outside shed

The SWA is about 23m and the T & E is no more than 10m running along the inside of the integral garage to the house c/unit. Will the metal clad shed c/unit be ok to connect the SWA directly to or would you recommend still connect to some form of metal box first. Many thanks.

    Power to outside shed

BAS, The more I read your comments the more I'd like to work and learn from you-thanks. Would you agree to a 32A MCB for 4.0mm T & E connected to SWA 4.0mm supply from house c/unit to RCD shed c/unit. Thanks.

    Outside Electrics

While on the same subject, would you agree to a 32A MCB for SWA 4.0mm supply to a shed connecting to a metal 6A MCB for lights and 16A MCB for sockets. The supply from the house c/unit will be on the RCD side. The sockets will run mower and power tools etc but not on a heavy basis and all...

    Supp Bonding

Thanks for all that. Yes, I agree that in an ideal world the bonding of the radiator should be completed before the floor was laid. However, I was assuming that the floor had already been laid so was now inacessable so my next question is: do electricians actually 'sweat' cables onto pipes...

    Power to outside shed

Thanks for the replies. BAS, spoke to a leckie with over 40yrs experience today and his view was to take the supply for the shed from the house RCD side and his reason was to protect the SWA feeding the shed CU. Appears to make sense to me but you can see why I get so frustrated when...

    Supp Bonding

Would you please advise me on supp bonding in the bathroom. I know this must be carried out but have been told that it must also be connected to the lighting circuit. Is this correct and where is this laid down. Also, if the bathroom floor had just been laid and assume it cost a lot of...

Using a light switch to make connections

Thanks for that. Yes, you are correct, he uses the switch as a junction box which means he only has one cable to the light and when it is impractical to gain access to the light this makes the cable routing a lot easier.

Using a light switch to make connections

The leckie I work for often uses the light switch for the feed/neutral in/out and the switch connection if access to the lighting point is not possible or impractical. This sometimes means he may have 4/5 cables to terminate at a single switch, how does he do it. Does anyone know where I...

Integrity of the entire installation post c/unit change

Thanks for the replies. I agree with you both. We are talking along the lines that maybe the equi bonding is say 6mm or not even present. The point being, do you rectify the problem before the consumer unit change, do nothing and report findings on your certificate or say to customer...

    Power to outside shed

Point taken BAS re: once the cost of trunking/conduit is added I may as well run the SWA as close as poss to both the c/units. And yes, you are correct with your assumption that the garage is integral etc. What are your views re: which RCD side to use, the house or a new RCD c/unit for the...

Integrity of the entire installation post c/unit change

You have probably all seen this before but would appreciate your views. If you were going to carry out a consumer unit change and you noticed the main equipotential bonding not up to the latest BS7671 regs, or perhaps none at all, what do you do???? Do you carry out the job and write all...

    Power to outside shed

Thanks for the v.quick reply PT. Would you mind just expanding on the discrimination part as I don't doubt your answer one bit but some leckies seem to have a different view.i.e the opposite to what you said. If I were to tell you the SWA will be 4.0mm would you still use your suggested...

    Power to outside shed

Firstly, would the general opion be of all you leckies that if supplying power to a shed for 1 light and 4 sockets to try and use SWA and adaptable/thru boxes up to both the house and new shed c/units or use adaptable/thru boxes and connect T & E to the consumer units? Secondly, I hear...

    Outdoor Electrics

Thanks again ban. Do you spend all your time helping out others? I find it frustrating that you can ask a question, no matter who you speak to and most people come up with different answers or solutions. It seems these regs are so open to interpetation. On that note, wot is the...

    Outdoor Electrics

    Earth Spike or Not?

Really need help on this one as like most subjects here, this is another one open to discussion. Would you please tell me if I need to install an earth spike on a PME system when installing a new metal CU 22mtrs away from the house. I know Ban you have already made comments on this but one...
