    adhesive shelf life ?

I have noticed that all tube-contained adhesives such as No Nails etc all have a shelf life of only 12 months, regardless of the technology of the product ie hybrid polymer, solvent or water based. Yesterday, I bought a tube of a similar product from a big DIY chain and I was shocked to see that...

    Fence gravel boards

I shall be constructing a 1.2 metre high feather board fence soon. Do the feather boards sit on the gravel board with the gravel board taking their weight or do the nails bear all the weight with the gravel board merely making it look neat ? The reason I ask is because when I walk around looking...

UPVC around a wooden door ?

We had a rotting external side-entrance door that was visible from the road. I have stained and polyurethaned a replacement door to match our rosewood UPVC windows and it looks fine (smugly happy) I have removed the old wood side architraves and the front facing wood trims. I was going to...

    smallest rotary pipe cutter ?

Does anyone know of a rotary 15mm copper pipe cutter that is smaller in diameter than the ones you normally see in Screwfix etc ? I have limited accessibility and turning space underneath the bath floorboards. Maybe they don't exist but thanks for reading anyway.

    Compression coupler-nut weep end

I have a compression fitting that has a tiny weep from the backend of the nut ie not the end that threads on. I know sometimes a compression fittings leak appears on the thread end of the nut. Does the end of the nut that leaks, tell you anything about the nature of the cause of the weep and...

    15mm compression nuts, 24mm or 23mm ??

I was fed up using adjustable spanners for compression fittings so I decided to get some open spanners. I took a couple of different makes of 15mm nuts along with me to check. I tested two plumbers spanners that were (the correct) 24mm in size. They were too big for my liking, probably about...

    cutting copper pipe for pushfit

I may need to cut piece of copper pipe with a multitool or Dremel that's in a difficult position. I then want to use a *pushfit* coupler, either Techtite or John Guest. Everybody says that you need to cut the pipe square - but I can't guarantee this. Am I right in thinking that as long as the...

    Are compression fittings interchangeable ?

Are compression fitting standard size with respect to the distance between the olive on the pipe and the compression surface on the fitting body ? For example if you had stuck olives on a pipe, could you be confident a new coupler (of a different make) would physically work in place of the old one ?

    PTFE tape vs Boss White

There are many threads about whether to use PTFE, jointing compound or nothing What I wanted to know is *how* PTFE tape or jointing compound actually helps stop the leak and do they effectively work in the same way. My theory was that the olive is failing slightly and that the PTFE or the paste...

Adding battens to a wall with piers

I have a wall with several piers and I just want to add wooden battens similar to the photo I have attached here. 1) Could please tell me what this type of wall is called (if it has a name) 2) Also, what type of wood I need for a pro finish. I have seen a similar wall (but the battens were...

    Boiler temp for radiator water

We have had a new system boiler (Glowworm R18) fitted in the property we rent out. The central heating temp is showing 75 degrees on the readout. The central heating system is probably about 20 or 30 years old. Does such a high temp put added pressure on the pipes, valves and joints ? Would...

LS-X inside a compression joint - let it dry ?

If you use LS-X inside a compression joint (as an alternative to say, PTFE tape), do you need to let it 'dry' before repressurizing the cold water mains ? Thank you

    Using existing olive on pipe

Removing an olive from some 15mm pipe will be very difficult. We are aware of the options such as olive puller, sawing off etc but we want to try and use a new isolator valve with the old olive in place as a first attempt. My friend who has done this before has used LS-X (probably because this...

Flexible copper pipe and inserts ?

I need to use a 300mm flexible/bendable 15mm copper pipe (the corrugated type that looks like a coil) but I have read that the copper is only 0.6mm thick and therefore weaker than normal 0.8mm copper. Would it be okay to use a plastic insert to strengthen it for compression and push-fit at its...

Where should a NRV go? Combi starts when cold taps run.

I too have this problem. New Glowworm fitted in a recently re-developed property with a water meter about 30ft away in the street. I have no idea if there are dead legs but I there could well be as there apparently used to be a immersion tank and also wash basin in a bedroom. Trawling round the...
