    Which saw?

Hi Guys, I do a fair bit of diy for myself and friends and for wood cutting I normally use a circular saw or a hand saw. The thing with using the circular saw is that I find it takes a fair while to set up each cut on my workbench so I was thinking of investing in a table saw or mitre saw...

    Leak around skylight

Hi, I have a large building at the bottom of my garden which has been there from before I moved in and we've converted it into a gym/summer room. The roof is pitched although the angle is very shallow - definitely no more than 20 degrees and has two skylights. A damp patch inside...

    Earthing a jaccuzi's motor

When something needs to be earthed such as a jacuzzi motor, is it necessary to run the earthing cable directly to the earth block on the consumer unit or is it okay to attach the earth cable to the earth in the cable from the spur to the power supply of the jacuzzi using a junction box. The...

Is there any accepted wisdom about using plastic connectors instead of junction boxes? Are plastic connectors acceptable for extending a wire and are they acceptable insetad of a junction box? I've extended a cable and used plastic connectors and then wrapped it up in insulated tape. Is...

A question to all the qualified electricians out there... I have a successful career in IT making pretty good money but I am soooooo bored! I really enjoy working with my hands instead of staring at a screen all day. However, I'm 34 and it would be a big move to try and change career...

Earth wire and double insulated appliances

I have an extractor fan for the bathroom which is double insulated so doesn't require earthing. My question is what is the best thing to do with the earth wire? I've cut it back at the fan but should I still wire it in with the rest of the earth wires at the junction box or should it be cut...

Plastic waste pipes - a lesson

A lesson learnt the hard way! 40mm Push fit and compression waste pipes and 40mm solvent weld waste pipes are not actually the same diameter on the outside of the pipe. So be sure you pick up the right ones! I wasted a few bob!

    Compression or capillary joints

Hope there's a plumbing expert out there who can help! I've heard that compression joints shouldn't be used underneath floorboards or where they can't be reached easily as they aren't as reliable as capillary joints. Is this true? I've used loads of compression joints fitting a new bath...
