A spark from a fault could cause fallen reed to ignite. Firehoods give some protection against this. Very dry reed and high temperatures or sparks do not mix.

I don't think there's anything specific but it's always a good idea to check for firehoods on downlighters. Where practical, I always check roofspaces for rodent damage, either to the thatch itself leaving reed on or near cable runs, or to the cables themselves.

Assuming next door is on a different phase from you, you're introducing a 400v potential to your house. If you do manage to restore power over the weekend, make sure the extension lead is disconnected immediately. If not, then disconnect it when your spark starts work on Monday.

You mention corrosion. Was there any moisture present? A water leak or spillage shorting the socket perhaps?

Put your findings in writing to the insurance company. Send it registered so you get a signature confirming receipt. You have to CYA in case someone decides to go against your findings and re-energises the installation. You don't want it to become a your word against his situation if...
