Are you sure they are painted? Some primers are grey in colour. It may be that somebody primed the pipes but did not finish the paint job. If you want to return the pipes to their natural colour a rub with wire wool should return them to their natural state. The copper pipes will quickly...

Thanks for your reply hi-spec plumb heating. Would a system cleanser and flush along with a cleaning of the header tank remove the blockage? or is the long term remedy something more drastic?
