I have lovely 3panel internal doors, original, well kept and unpainted but with mish mash of handles.
Anyone know what hadnles would have been original and more importantly what I can put on that would wokr and look 'right'
Also is it a cardinal sin to paint the doors white for a fresher look?

There is some shadows and screw holes which show the doors had 'plates' and there is a key hole (most keys lost Im afraid so this is a whole other story!! If painting I could fill in the keyholes, but mayb in future it might be nice to be able to lock the doors?

If painting not a good idea, how do get the doors to have a more even tone? They look uneven at present and when I have tried to wash them the colour has become even more uneven! There is some evidence of paint in the panels so they look like they were lovingly stripped a long time ago.

I suspect they may have been bakelite door handles which are the ugliest thing around, so am really asking for help for a suitable alternative.
Found some basic round ceramic black ones, but then there is no 'plate'
Getting desparate as have looked estensively on web and in salvage yards ( as had same prob in my old house!)

My house is a similiar period and I have black rim latches some of which have a snib to lock the door whilist you are in the room. Knobs are smallish brass knobs.
I have to disagree about the bakelite I find it a beautiful material and I have a number of knobs which if I can ever get enough to match I may just replace all those brass ones.
Other alternatives are basic mortise latchs or lock and there are some handle sets on ebay
ok so these are bakelite-

and so on and so on
As to painting , yes it's fine to paint it's your house after all and anyway lightness was in vogue at the time. Only real advice I'd give though is to go for an eggshell finish in off white, looks far more classy than a hard gloss paint.
