In replacing the above, the old switch serving 2 living room lights is wired as:
left side- 1x red wire at terminal 1 linked to terminal 1 on right side (live)
left side- 1x red wire at terminal 2.
right side- 1x black wire with red sleeve at terminal 2 (switched live)
back box earthed.
All working fine.

New switch has terminals L1,L2,C on both sides but when connected as old switch nothing is working with no switched live, what is wrong.

Sometimes new switches are configured differently to old switches, but they still work the same.
On the old switch you had a link wire going from the common (C) to the common on the RHS switch, as a feed for that switch.
You will need to do the same for the new switch. I.e. common to common.
Hence the other red wire on LHS will go to L1.
Black wire (with red sleeve) then goes to L1 on RHS switch.

If in any doubt have a look at the Wiki.

thanks for your info luminaire.
I have sorted it out and it was the common wire in the wrong place!
