55mm padstone and brickwork gap

Is there a maximum gap for dry packing mortar under a padstone?

The gap I have at the moment is roughly 55mm and I wanted to double check if there is an alternative solution?

Under a padstone? May be able to use cut down blocks.

I have also consulted SE.

Apparently common methods are:

1. Pack the gap with 100mmx100mm steel plates
2. Use specialist mortar which will not shrink

Be careful of steel plates rusting and bleeding through plaster. Paint the faces.

50mm pavers, quarry or flat clay roof tiles, build up the course below the padstone.
