Adding a switch in series to Honeywell T40 Thermostat

Why not control everything from Ipad, netbook, laptop, pc or smart phone ?
A better question would be "why?"

Modernisation seems to want automation. The ability to look at various things at various time from a common source such as an iPad may well become normal for our grand children.

Instant real time costs of energy used in house.
Alarm / Security and CCTV control
Access control
Lighting
Heating with zones and individual room control
Music
AV
Network
Comms

I'm sure there's a host of other day to day functions to add to the above.

I'm not sure there's a direct answer to 'why', other than 'why not'- the humble pc is 30 years old, the net 10 or so, smart phones 4 or so. Progress ?

Do you really think that in a few decades such home auto kit won't be common place in new builds ?

It is bad enough when the remote control for the TV goes missing.

Imagine the anguish if the remote control for the lights has a flat battery and the house is in darkness.

Technology is fine but not when it is force fitted where it is not needed.

I guess turning the heating on or up a few degrees without getting off your arse would be an advantage.

But not instead of normal heating control, but in addition to.
