What about LPG you can get appliances for heating, hot water and cooking.
You would need a fuel tank for oil or LPG so no difference there and most domestic boilers can run on LPG and cookers can be run on LPG. Just a small alteration to normal appliance ie different jets are required.
If your mother is old and set in her ways, be sure to get a well-insulated cylinder with one, or preferably two, immersion heaters, one at the top and one at the bottom. With the help of a timer, this will give her hot water at least without the effort of carrying hods of coal about. Modern insulation will also mean it keeps the heat from whatever other method is used.
I think the oil is going to be the best for the hot water and heating as it can just be filled up a few times a year. Is there a valve i can get to possibly switch heating/hot water from oil to solid fuel if we go this route?
So for 1 elderly lady what size tank is suitable?
What size and make oil heaters should i be looking at?
For cooking i think the electric cooker is probably her best bet.
Fitted back in the early seventies. This was before the neutralizer was even invented.
Previous back boiler taken out. It had been running trouble free for 40 years and would probably have lasted another 40 years.
After I left it took about a week to sort itself out but all fine and dandy now. Controls are simplified with these set ups.
re cylinder size, a bath takes about 100 litres. The bottom fifth or thereabouts of a cylinder does not get heated, so about 125 litres is typical. In summer you can mix in more cold, but in winter the cold water is very cold so will chill the bath more. I have a preference for larger cylinders, if there is room, then she could e.g. wash up before a bath and still have enough water. With modern insulation it will stay hot all day, or until used up.
