Hi

Can anybody help me. we have the Alpha 240 combi boiler, when we turn the hot water tap on, the burners light, hot water arrives, but then the burner cut out, then after a couple of minute they light again, and so on.

More than likely the plate heat exchanger is starting to block up

I have recently had exactly the same problem on my Alpha CD24C boiler. We called out a local Alpha specialist who tracked the fault to the Domestic Hot Water Heat Exchanger. The problem was a build up of sludge restricting the flow.
One new heat exchanger & one magnaclean later & the problem is fixed.... Now the only problem is working out how to pay the £520 bill.

Good luck with yours

£520! Was that bill itemised? Sounds bloody expensive to me.

Yes bill was itemised

£93 To find fault (1.5hrs + travel)
£122 To replace part (2hrs + travel)
£124 for new heat exchanger
£90 for Magna Clean
£14 for replced sensor.

+ VAT for Mr Brown!

still seems expensive! where did he travel to exactly-Italy? I could have done that for £295 all in.

5 mins to diagnose
30 mins to replace part
£95 part
£90 magnaclean
£10 sensor

BG would have done fixed price for £160 with a guarantee ( magnaclean not included)

I would get rid if you can. It sounds like it needs flushing or get a new h/ex but your not solving the true proplem of sludge and t will affect the new h/ex in the future so get rid unless it turns out to be a faulty stat or the diapraghm on the diverter is gone

What?
get rid of the boiler?? How does that solve contamination??
Sounds like it was just the plate he, its a combi so there shouldn't be any obvious reason for future build up of corrosion and the magnaclean should take care of any bits floating around before it reaches the plate he.
The guys done the right thing if you ask me.....

So you recommend a new boiler to everyone with a blocked plate he do you?

No of course i dont, but alpha;s(come on)and what i should have said was get rid get a flush and your ok,because alphas arent great and not cheap for spares

Malkie what boiler do you like? Do not say Worcester as I would not fit one if it was the last boiler on earth.

Maybe you do not know but there is a big brand name supposedly based on the Alpha. Good components and well built boiler.

To replace the boiler is a case of workman blaming the tools. If the system had been cleaned and treated properly in the first instance, boiler would not have needed a replacement HWHE
