hi all
i'm building some alcove cupboards and shelves (see image at www.andygodwin.co.uk/shelves.jpg )

the cupboard bit is fine but i'm using 18mm mdf for the shelve units,
and with 4 shelves 2 sides and a back the whole thing (carcus only) weighs in at about 50kilos..

i'm worried about supporting that weight.. i've separated the shelf from cupboard so that it rests on some chunky battons and have some 2x1 battons at the top to stop it falling fwd.
but am i doing this correctly?? should i be using 12mm mdf? or something else??

MDF is heavy, and not very strong. Ply would be better. You can attach a batten to the front face; this hides the plies and also makes it stiffer.

cheers
do you happen to know the weight of ply??

the surface of ply is rough and grainy isnt it? this would ruin my paint effect that has to be flawless..

is there a way of priming the surface?

ah
should i start again with this
No, just use decent wall fixings. I regularly hang runs of kitchen carcasses - there's a bit more than 50kg in a 6metre run
