Amana Washing Machine stopped

I have 3 year old Amana Washing Machine. Machine suddenly stopped and I smell the burning smell. I called the Technician, he found broken belt. Now he is telling me there is transmission problem. How can I find out, it's transmission problem not just broken belt. I don't trust these technicians. Everyone of them tries to charge out rage amount.
I need your help.
