When I enlarged it I found it was a lampshade but what is that coloured spaghetti at the back right?

Ahaa! That is the wiring! its a delicate setup

I've checked the wires too and from the 2 port valve (except the orange wire that goes nowhere, its all wired as is here "http://www.jturnbull.net/c_heating/sp_hw.htm") The timer goes directly to the boiler from what I can tell, presumably to the stat on the front panel, and then back to this box.

I'm worried that if I fitted a valve to the HW it might do something crazy like back up water from some overflow or something. I guess I would have to wire both the "micro switches" to the pump and boiler to prevent it pumping into closed valves (I assume its getting its power directly from the timer/via the stat at the moment).

If you add another valve to the HW side then I would start again with the wiring and connect it up correctly as an 'S' plan. HW can be run independantly during the CH 'off' periods so the boiler can give its full effort to the CH.

It would then require one (or both) of the valves to be open before the boiler and pump will run so the water has somewhere to go.

I would start by puttting a new grundfos pump in there. That pumps a decent age and theres a good chance its not circulating at its best. Throw some system cleaner in there whilst your there and leave that to circulate for a while before draining it out.

Then look into having better control over system. Conversion to full S plan would be best.

Thanks to everyone for their reply.

I'll Probably look in to adding another valve, Whats advantageous about this Y-Plan anyway? Surely just double valves on the old system I've got will work to the same effect/efficiency?

I'll throw some cleaner in there and see what happens, I'm assuming If I drain the system (turn that valve I was told about earlier to stop the cold feed) it will be a case of letting it re-fill and continually bleed all the radiators for a few days and here and there after.? Or is it more about just letting the old water run out as new stuff runs in so it gets flushed out cleaner and cleaner?

Again thanks to everyone for chipping in and providing info and help, I'm sure it will help me keep my money a bit safer and stop the evil oil barons from taking over the world (well at least for a bit...)
