This is really weird...
Suspecting the bottle trap under the kitchen sink might be blocked I unscrewed it and tipped out the crud like I've done a few times in the past. Noticing that the black rubber sealing ring was slightly raised at one point I pushed it back into the groove only to have the thing start to creep slowly up out of its groove like it was alive. I had got myself a gasket which was a much bigger diameter then the groove which it came out of. It looked thinner than normal too. Panic. 8 o'clock on Sunday evening, with Bank holiday activities already planned.
I cut about 2cm off altogether, shaping the ends to get something of a gradual overlap and so prevent a leak. It seems to be working so far.
Question 1:
How on earth can a gasket like that expand? I can understand rubber/plastic hardening or crumbling.
Question 2:
Am I likely to find a replacement gasket anywhere? I don't do any serious plumbing and would rather make a gasket than mess around with plastic pipe fittings.
