If the span center unloaded deflection increases quickly just before a failure you'd think for a few dollars they could put a monitor on bridges over a certain age.

Expect more of this in the USA - the country's infrastructure is now so under-funded that no maintenance or inspection is taking place and the American roads and railways are reaching the same stage of catastrophic collapse as our railways did just before de-nationalisation.
