Having read the posts on the subject i have not found a solution to my problem:

layout as follows:
i have three light switches to control the same lights, being the upstairs passageway:

at the foot of the stairs
at the top of the stairs
at the end of the passage

the cabling is as follows:

foot of stairs:
two cables: one set: Red and Black
second set: Blue white and red

Top of stairs:
Two cables: one set: blue white and red (the red one is connected to another red cable and is not included in the switch
second set: Black red

end of passage: one cable
Red Black and Red

the old switches which were removed did not have any markings such as L1 etc so i am having some difficulty in deciding on the various combinations:

i purchased three new light switches:

two were 10amp double 2 way and have L1:comm:L2 connectors for each rocker

one is a single switch with L1:comm: L" connectors and one rocker switch (replacing the old one rocker switch for the end of the passage)

would appreciate advice on how to connect the various combinations.

thanks

one of your switches should be an intermediate (has 4 terminals_

the three switches you need are two 1 gang two way, they have C, L1 & L2 on them and one intermediate switch it will have four terminals marked L1 L1 L2 L2 depending on the manufacturer, anyway :-
foot of stairs
red of two core cable L1
black of two core cable L2
Red of three core cable C
blue of three core cable L1
white of three core cable L2

top of stairs
take the red of the red red black cable out of the block ( this will make it easier later)
put the black of the red red black cable into the block with the red of the red blue white cable
blue top left terminal
white top right terminal
red bottom left terminal (any red)
red bottom right terminal (any red)

end of passage
black in C
red in L1 (any red)
red in L2 (any red)

job done

thanks for your advice, i will assemble the tools and head for the switches. :p

Fireman: thanks for the clear instructions on the connection:

I followed your instructions carefully :p and found that the base of the stairsand the top of the stairs switches worked  but alas the end of upstairs passage switch had no effect.

here is my connection sequence:

top of stairs connection: 6 connectors each side with L1 L2 and C

Red Red Black Cable: Red to L2 left ( looking at switch)
Red to Right Common (looking at switch)
Black to Left Common (looking at switch)

White BLue Red cable: White to L1 left (looking at switch)
Blue to L1 right (looking at switch)
Red to L2 right (looking at switch)

in your instructions you mentioned left and right side and i assumed that this was from the wall looking out

other two switches were connected per your detailed guidelines.

thanks again for your patience!

Mell

no mell follow my instructions,
top of stairs switch connect black of red red black cable to red of red white blue cable in a connector block
i.e. two cables in one connector block (red and black)
then rest as my previous post
job done, this time i hope

this switch tho is an intermediate switch and should only have four holes to put cables into not six as you stated

Fireman:

Now i understand. I had purchased an incorrect light switch which had 6 connectors, hence my confusion re interpretation of your instructions.

Have now purchased an intermediate light switch which has 4 connectors and will have another go.

thanks

I had purchased an incorrect light switch which had 6 connectors,
That means it's a 2-gang switch. Did you need a 2-gang?

Have now purchased an intermediate light switch which has 4 connectors and will have another go.
That means it's a single-gang switch. Do you need a 2-gang?
