How should I apply wall tile adhesive in a shower area?

I'm using BAL Grip and 400 x 250mm tiles. The instructions state that there should be no voids beneath the tiles so for the first row I have applied the adhesive smooth on the wall then applied a thin back buttering to the tiles. Two problems with this are:

1. I'm using an awful lot of adhesive!
2. If I pull the tile off I can see some areas (approx 30-40% of the tile) where there is no contact so presumeably there is a void. I'm applying the adhesive as level as I can.

Is it a skill I will pick up as I go along or is there an easier way?

Thanks :)

Apply the adhesive with a notched trowel. If you use a 6x6mm notched trowel then by the time you have pushed the tile to the wall then you'll more or less have a solid bed 3mm thick.
Personally I prefer a 5x5 trowel - uses less adhesive and it's easier to get the tiles flat.

Now get that bath level. :D
