Any idea what type of block this is?

I used to know them as cinder blocks. Nightmare when trying to chisel out for backing boxes as they simply crumbled when you tried to chisel them.
 
I think conderblock is a more dense, compacted aggregate isn’t it? These are quite big the pebbles
