ariston boiler noise

We have the same boiler (ariston aco 32 rffi) and problem (sounds like car back firing, repeatedly) as 'aristonboilerman' ca. 6 wks ago; we have switched it off until repair man gets here, as there is a visible brown burn mark on the outer casing, presumably in the repeated backfiring location. The unit is 3 yrs old and was moved 7 months ago during an extension. Don't think the warranty was validated despite posting the registration card.

Can anyone help? ..or can aristonboilerman advise what his problem was and what remedied it?
