Back boilers

Hi all,
can someone please explain about back boilers, !?
are they heated by the gas fire that is in front of them?

if not then why do people put them there?


any advice would be good

Basically you have 2 units,, the back boiler does the hot water and heating and the fire is just for that room

Often the space in the fireplace opening was thought of as a wasted space so putting a boiler in there was an advantage, especially if no other reasonable location could be found.

was the back boiler put in to the space where the coal fire used to go in the olden days? before coal became extinct?

Yep, the old back boilers were used with coal fires to provide HW.
