Banging cold water pipe

Hi there,

I'm no specialist in plumbing but we've got a problem developing at home. For a little while the hot water tap in our kitchen has started to make some banging noises when it is turned on - generally after 10/15 seconds of use. Ways of solving the problem have been either to increase the pressure of the flow of water or turn the tap off.

We could live with that but now the cold water tap (also in the kitchen) has started behaving in the same way, only the banging is much stronger!

All other taps in the house (bathroom, and also the WC flush) are working fine.

I would assume that it is due to a pressure problem somewhere, but what and how to solve it ???

I have lived in this house for 5 years without problems before.

FIrst consider clamping of pipes - it it OK or do the pipes waggle? COuld be loose "jumpers" in worn taps. Dismantle to inspect.

If it's started to happen with NO changes to plumbing, then it's almost certainly wear in the taps - the 'jumper' holding the washer is doing what it says (!) and jumping up and down on the valve seat causing pipe hammer.
If both taps are doing it (I assume you have a Combi boiler or other type of mains-pressure hot water) then replacement taps or tap cores may be the only answer. Try new washers first.
